On 09th of June 2014, IC conducted ear screening at Porthiban primary school which is located in Porthiban village, Porthiban commune, Koh Thom district, Kandal province. There were 10 classes with a total number of 475 students and 196 are female. School principal has helped us in identifying those who have hearing problem. 38 children have been found positive with hearing difficulty. When asking what the problem is, one boy told us that “I’m deaf”, others said “I cannot hear well”.
Our doctors provided screening and treatment to all of them: Four (3 girls and 1 boy) suffered from Chronic Otitis Media with ear discharged, six (2 girls and 4 boys) had external ear infection. The rest of them had hard wax in the ear. After removing the hard wax, they said they can hear clearly now.
This was not the first mission. On 28th April, we conducted similar mission to Sambour primary school in Sambour village, Sambour commune, Lvea Em Distict. In Sambour primary school there is 367 children. Among 47 children that have been screened for ear problem, four of them had Chronic Otitis Media. We will follow up all these children in the next screening mission successively in the next two months.
